Acid House - What is acid house and where did it come from? From how I see it the acid house explosion was the start of it and the framework of how the house scene is today. The acid house sound was and still is unique with the sound of the 303 wobbling and pitching to a continuous beat with simple percussion to create a journey of sound and hynosis. Pioneers like DJ Pierre and Phuture made history and although there are many variations of who started it first and what not mine is Phuture and many other like Jackmaster Funk, Mark Inperial, Laurent X and Bam Bam to name a few. Trax from the US and Jack Trax in the UK exposed the acid sound with Dj's like Mark More and Danny Rampling pushing it through to the rave crowds. Back in 88 raves were raves, just a empty metal warehouse with a huge scary looking bouncer on the door and pure acid playing to a dark room and strob lights flickering frantacly to the beat. Everyone hypnotised by the acid sound and repatitive beat while probably out of their heads on LSD, Acid!

In the acid house days producers made more of the acid sound and introduced it to more of a house sound more familiar to most people today. Rough and ready experimental house sounds were still about like Phuture - Your Only Friend but the production started to become more crisp. 808 State have made some outstanding house classics with brilliant production but they also made some excellent early music as well.

808 State made some classic trippy tracks that not many know about out of the acid scene. Obviously there was the Pacific State, Cubik and In Ya Face but here was also the infamous Newbuild album with the classic Flowcoma on (that is just tops by the way!) and we had prebuild a later release but still wicked all the same. More classic just flowed out like Charles B - Lack of love and The Garden Of Eden - Garden Of Eden with some classic vocal track as well from Pierres Fantasy Club - Fantasy Girl and also Mystery Girl.
Production was coming from everywhere and acid track were in full flow. I was in my element as I loved it and still do and occasional I do find the acid track from old and new that takes my fancy. Acid house was an era that, I feel, will never be relived because of the progression. House as we know it with hundreds of genres was not like that then and people were less choosie and more appreciative of the music.

Long live the acid I will post some more of my thoughts soon with more tracks and mixes.

I have been collecting acid for years and here are a few mixes form that classic era for you to download and listen to.

Enjoy!
